Revival of the Philippine Cotton Industry

Cotton production is one of the prospect commodities for development in Westen Visayas, thus; the Iloilo Science and Technology University in partnership with Philippine Fiber Development Authority (PhilFIDA) conducted a Refresher Training on Cotton Production last November 10, 2020 at ISAT U Leon Campus.

Experts from the PhilFIDA RFO VI shared their expertise through lectures which was attended by thirty (30) local farmers. The topics discussed during the training were: the Features of Recommended Cotton Production Technology by Mr. Lindelle Villorente, (Cotton Coordinator, PhilFIDa RSO VI), Recommended Cotton Production Technology by Ricardo C. Escondida, (Science Research Specialist in Cotton Research and Development Institution), Integrated Pest Management by Mr. Nemspat Joevenet T. De Juan (Provincial Fiber Officer in Iloilo Province, PhilFIDa RSO VI) and Miss Teodora Ga, (Cotton Technician, PhilFIDa RSO VI) and Economics of Cotton Production by Mrs. Evelyn B. Cagasan (Officer in Charge, PhilFIDa RSO VI). Aside from providing technical assistance as resource speakers, PhilFiDa also commits to provide production inputs such as seeds, fertilizers and chemicals for farmers who would engage in cotton production.

The training was made possible by the Extension Services Division of ISAT U Leon Campus with full support from the administration headed by Dr. Julito Aligaen, Campus Administrator, Carmelo V. Ambut, VP for Research and Extension, Dr. Adrienne D. Veloso, Director for Extension Services Division and Dr. Rafael Cabarles, Production Chair of ISAT U Leon Campus.
