Dr. Talagon Participates in the Training of Agro Morphological Characterization and Nut Component Analysis of Outstanding Coconut Palms

Dr. Eric James P. Talagon actively participated in the Batch 1 Training on Agro-Morphological Characterization and Nut Component Analysis of Outstanding Coconut Palms hosted by the Capiz State University (CAPSU) in Roxas City, Capiz, from August 10 to 14, 2026, under the PCAARRD Advanced Learning Management System.

The 5-day training aimed to equip participants with scientific methods in identifying and selecting superior coconut palms to improve coconut productivity and genetic conservation. Activities included field surveying of tall coconut plantations, farmer interviews, safety protocols on palm climbing, and hands-on sessions on leaf sampling for DNA extraction and tissue analysis, as well as soil sample collection.

Participants also underwent agromorphological characterization, nut component analysis, and cocotrace application training led by experts from UPLB, DOST-PCAARRD, and the Philippine Coconut Authority – Zamboanga Research Center. On the final day, participants presented and defended their proposals on coconut selection and genetic identification before a panel composed of Dr. Juanito Sangalang of DOST-PCAARRD, Dr. Salvacion J. Legaspi of CAPSU, Ms. Mariecris Rizalyn R. Mendoza of UPLB, and Ms. Mary Ann Abustan. The training concluded with a post-test, awarding of certificates, and closing remarks by Dr. Legaspi, the project leader.
