ISAT U Leon Campus Welcomes the New Academic Year 2026-2027 with an ASEAN Month Celebration
The blank canvas of Iloilo Science and Technology University Leon Campus – empty hallways and a covered gym was once again painted by excited greetings and tight hugs as students decorated the grounds of the campus for the opening class of the academic year 2026-2027.
The day began with a flag-raising and the opening ceremony of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) 2026 celebration, aligned with the theme “Inclusive, Resilient, Sustainable, – Together for a Better Tomorrow”. The ASEAN Month is celebrated to commemorate the founding anniversary of the organization and to promote regional peace, stability, and cultural diversity among members.
The opening was attended by the students, where the faculty, and staff worn their ASEAN-themed attire. Eleven Southeast Asian Nation flags (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Timor-Leste) were hoisted as part of the celebration.
For her opening remarks, Dr. Maryflor T. Cansancio, OIC, Head of Instructions, warmly welcomed everyone to the opening ceremony of the ASEAN. She highlighted that the theme carries a powerful message-the future we want cannot be achieved alone. It is something we must build together. Emphasizing that we should celebrate our differences, build friendship, and recognize that we are part of something bigger than ourselves.
Subsequently, Dr. Gilbert Stanly D. Baylosis, Campus Administrator, gave his message to welcome the students for the new school year. In his message, he thanked the faculty and staff for their continuous dedication and commitment to the university. He additionally welcomed the students and congratulated the freshmen for passing through a rigorous admission process, reminding them that the place they are in is an opportunity that should not be taken for granted.
In relation to the ASEAN celebration, he said that ASEAN speaks “One Vision, One Identity, One Community”; although we came from different origins, economic circumstances, experiences, and so forth, we will not be limited by borders as we are connected as one ISAT U community. He, as well, reiterated the institution’s core values: ICARE (Integrity, Commitment, Accountability, Responsiveness, and Excellence), that the five words should not be merely a display on the university walls but should be seen and carried by all of us, as part of the academic community.
Afterwards, the members of the faculty and staff were (re)introduced for the new students to be familiarized with, together with their handled class advisories, subjects, and offices. For the returning sophomores, juniors, and seniors, the early morning event brought a familiar nostalgia for another semester of bittersweet journey; on the other hand, freshmen walked the crowds with uncertainty as they still tried to navigate their new environment.
