Empowering Change: ISAT U Leon Campus Embraces One Billion Rising Initiative

Violence against women remains a deeply rooted and widespread problem globally. The ‘One Billion Rising’ movement derives its name from the alarming statistic that approximately one in three women—equivalent to one billion individuals worldwide—will experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. Fueled by the urgency to address this crisis, the campaign seeks to inspire collective action and raise awareness on a massive scale.

On January 15, 2024, around 7:30 in the morning, students, faculty, and staff gathered in the ISAT U Leon Campus covered gym to participate in a five-minute dance, formally launching One Billion Rising (OBR) 2024. They danced to the tune of ‘Isang Bilyon.’ The activity was spearheaded by Mrs. Jeremy C. Lamoste, the Gender and Development (GAD) coordinator of the campus.

One Billion Rising (OBR) made its debut in the Philippines in 2013, and since then, it has been an annual event observed every February 14th. This global initiative is a crucial part of an annual campaign aimed at increasing awareness and advocating for an end to violence against women and children.

The initiative sparks awareness among students, faculty, and staff, urging them to take action in safeguarding women’s rights and denouncing any form of violence directed towards them. As the campaign gains momentum, it is hoped that the collective power of ‘One Billion Rising’ will be a force strong enough to break the cycle of abuse and build a future of equality and respect for all.
